Where to start?
- It’s important for you to give us as much detail about your career history as possible.
- Every role we recruit for will be in the legal sector, so only include information of your work experience in this sector (unless you have had a career change).
- If you are a Paralegal candidate then even referring to short term work placements is useful, for more senior candidates, you may want to start with your Training Contract and include all information about what seats you took.
- Include a profile at the very top, this is a snapshot of yourself, use this to sell yourself as much as possible. Consider whether this would be viewed as an attractive overview of you as a candidate?
- Things to consider are: where your expertise lies, how you consider yourself as a candidate and what you're looking to achieve. Then include any specific skills you have, i.e. IT or management Skills.
- Log your roles in chronological order, most recent at the top. Use the following format: firm name, job title, month/year started and month/year finished for example:

March 2013 – January 2020
- For each role then detail as much of your duties and responsibilities as possible. The key here is to think whether what you're writing would be clearly understood by the hiring manager, and also, think whether this does you justice.
- Only having a few bullet points leaves too much to the readers (hiring managers) imagination, quash this by going in to as much detail as possible.
- If you have access to job descriptions from your current role, use these to help you.
- Having fee income detailed on your CV is also beneficial especially for fee earning positions.
- Include your interests at the very bottom. Stating your interests puts a human feel to what is generally a black and white document. You may wish to include your hobbies and interest or any volunteer work you do or even whether you have any first aid qualifications.
Remember to brag about yourself!
- When compiling your CV, don’t be too vague! It’s easy for us to trim a CV down if necessary so it is best for you to provide us with as much detail as possible.
Tidying it up
- Obviously, there should be no mistakes in your CV. To avoid this, ask a friend to look at your CV. We'll check this too.
- Try and include as many active words as possible to increase the impact of your CV.
- Use active verbs to replace passive verbs and nouns wherever possible. For example, you could include targeted words like 'created', 'analysed'; and 'devised' to present yourself as a person that shows initiative.
Send it across!
- When you have put the CV together send it to us and we will be happy to provide feedback and even make recommendations where necessary.
- We can provide example CV's if this would help, having said that you will need to know your employment history through and through; as you will be asked about it during an interview. So, while we're happy to help, it’s a good refresher exercise to compile / update your CV.
